Default Need help picking a year

Let me start by saying, I'm CHEAP!

I want to buy a sporty and I've been doing so much research that
my mind is on overload..

Iron head: Ok, for some reason the IH years are some of my favorite.
However, the cheap side of me has to pass.. It would have a much
higher cost to do a few of the things I might want.. The parts for it just seems to cost more.

Ahh, so that leaves us with the EVO.. I'd like to go a few years past the first year so I'm thinking about using 90 as a starting year.. However I like the start of the 95 (i think) for one reason only. Electronic speedo! I think it will give my more options down the road. unless I can easily make a pre 95 electronic..

I'm also thinking about the 883. (man! my butt hurts with all this thinking!!!)
I figure when I want a change I can buy some 1200 cans or a set of 883 cans and bore them out.

anyone here have some first hand reasons to buy or not buy one year from another?

If you are cheap go rubber mount and fuel injection. High initial price but a lot less headaches and expenses later.

Boring out an 883 will cost you more than buying a 1200.

But, I know, the inexperienced will buy cheap and learn the lessons later.

While I have never had any real problems with any carbed bike I've had, I do like the FI bikes much better.. And at my age rubber mounted engine is a must. But then so are forward controls, a mustang seat, and a back rest. What can I say, I'm getting old.

08 and up, low miles. shop around. Spend the extra grand and get something you don't have to open up or get baffled by someone elses doings. Find an unmolested, low mile basic. Use your monthly allowance to do it, as you want.

I thought this was going to happen...lol

I forgot to say: I don't want the 04 up. or a bike with FI..
My brother just lost a battery cover on his 05.. the thing cost
100 to replace. had it been a 86-03 it could of been found for next to nothing.
plus the only newer one I like is the 48 and I'm not going to find one much less then 10k around here.. For that kind of money I can build one hell of a bike with a older donor

I've always done all my own work be it cars, bikes, plumbing or anything else
that needs to be done.. As far a turning a 883 to a 1200 it can be done cheap.
I have friends that can bore the cans and I've seen 1200 top ends selling for under 300 (w/o heads) plus after riding her for a year with the 883 it would be like getting a new bike.. I also enjoy working on my bikes. for me it's almost as fun as riding when you can't ride.

The smart money is on a clean, late bike that can just be ridden and enjoyed.

But it sounds more like you have grand plans for mods, and that you're looking for a "project". That's OK, especially if you'd rather wrench than ride. We all have our projects. And since you made certain we knew you were particularly thrifty, and mechanically handy, why not add to that "patience", and search for the long "deal" on a Sporty in any condition, from a basket case up? If you'll be making sweeping changes, even to the motor, you'll find plenty of cheap offerings which cannot command top dollar, for one reason or other.
