Problems after rain
Oops bike is 2000 883
Yesterday I got caught in a little bit of rain, actually first time in the rain since gettingthe bike. It acted up with a few carb farts and I thought it was prolly on the cold side. Parked bike overnight started today and ran rough even with choke on full. Had to go out and it sputtered and back/misfired. Got to my appt parked bike for over an hour same when I headed home.
Later today pulled new plugs totally carbon fouled right up. Put in older ones runs good.
Sprayed wires tonight no arcing
Don't have a meter yet to check coil.
Now if the coil is on the way out would the rain affect it? Would a bad coil cause carbfarts?
Aside from coil and the wires would the rain cause something else to mess up?
I am more than sure the rain had something to do with it.
One biker guy at a meetup place suggested the wires or coil because if they were damp or wet the extra fuel not getting burned would up foul up the plugs in no time and then I would have the sputtering/ misfire /stall.
Since changing plugs back to older plugs and running it tonight with no rain, it runs good again.
New properly gapped plugs will change things,,
A 2003 should not have coil or wire problems,,,
checking wires,,are they soft and plyable?
get the bike In complete darkness, a garage,,
start it, Mist the wires with a spray water bottle..
any dancing lights on the wires means a voltage/current leak,
change em.
Have a freind hold a Hi Idle say,,2,500 rpms,,estimate It.
Spray a little WD-40 around the intake manifold, and back of the carb,
not in the air filter,,
If there Is a Intake leak the Idle will fall rapidly.
Did you properly GAP the new plugs? just cause they are new that
don't mean the gap Is correct.
Clean your Air filter,,,,,
Hopefully you got stock type plugs,,,
It's a 2000 Osco
I tried the spraying water in the dark but didn't rev it high to put a load on them and I soaked them pretty good. Did not see any arcing and bike stayed steady.
I checked the new plugs Gap and they were right on 0.040.
Yes they were not stock plugs. I wanted to try these Iradiums. But like I mentioned for 3 days the bike ran good and was more responsive on the new plugs better than when I put champs on a month ago. My reasoning for putting on new plugs ago was because I did not know the age of them from the prev owner and they were a little carbon up more than I would like however after putting those champs in I discovered it was not really running rich as I believe I was running the choke for too long and riding short distances in the city. Once I took it for a highway run it burnt off the carbon.
The only reason I went with the new plugs was to see if I could get more response out of them and I did. Some ppl say new plugs dont make a difference but I have run different types of plugs on other bikes and have heard and felt differences with the changeover. I feel once I know my bike I can feel and hear differences when I make tweaks. I don't want to debate the plugs as some ppl say it makes no difference but I am firm believer it often does. When I got my Suv after owning it for a bit I pulled the champs and put platinums in and it was night and day with regards to idle, throttle response and mpg.
I haven't checked the intake seals yet.
When I ran it in the rain I did not give it alot of time to warm up due to the rain and contributed it's rough running to it being cold.
I have discovered with this bike if I take off cold it sputters and is not happy till it is warmed up which usually happens after a short bit of gentle riding.
The only difference I am seeing is the rain but I might be wrong.
I am getting a meter today and checking the coil. The wires are not stock as they are Accell and look fairly new. They rubber feels normal.

I checked the ignition coil and on the secondary it is within spec, however, when i check the primary, the readings are all over the place.
I might be wrong, but i think it is possible the coil is bad.
I thought it might be my cheap meter, but the reading on the secondary is quite constant of a reading, and is within the range.
one good thing if it is the coil, it is only $60 or so.
I just got to confirm, if inconsistent readings all over the place is common for a bad coil, as the manual just says check the range and see if it is within spec.
Anyone else with coil experience, can pipe in plz ...heheh thanks guys
