skunky82 hit the nail on the head. not the first time i heard this.
While there's varying opinions on the subject I'd say the exhaust wrap contributed to the blow out. There's multiple threads with pics as proof on the xlforums.net website. I was seriously looking into wrapping my pipes until I read the horror stories.
The wrap traps the heat in instead of letting it dissipate. This can cause the header pipes to become brittle and shortly thereafter crack. Doesn't happen all the time but happens often enough that it turned me off of the whole idea.
Sorry that it happened to ya man, how's the scoot running with just the stock headers and no mufflers?
The front head pipe on my bike looks like it has been pretty hot and I haven't wrapped my pipes. If mine does break off like that, it will be time to get a set of 2-1 pipes.

Ahhh
Besides it looking fugly to me there's another reason to never do that to my bike lol
i just wrapped my pipes, but i dont care if they rust or blow on me, i had enough with V&H. they pretty much said "F U" to my rusting problem on the sheilds, "fist time this ever happened!" was what they said. oh well !
^^^wow really bigdogg? shoulda told them, this was the first time you ever bought V&H and it will also be the LAST time. from the sounds of it though, doesn't seem like they would care. i mean i would do it to an older set of pipes i didn't pay as much for but part of the reason i got the sideshots is because of the bitchin shields, love 'em.

Let me recommend and also not recommend the VH BLACKOUT 2:1.
They do not make heat shields for this pipe. And they actually recommend wrapping them. I love the pipes, hate the heat. Just ordered my wrap and will be putting it on this weekend.
heat stress and is especially prone to wrapped pipes. at first, i thought you were talking about split mufflers. i had a 500 goldstar that would toast any stock muffler that was put on it. i had to run a shortie chrome cherry bomb.
