Default Found the noise!!

Had a noise on deceleration in all gears and searched the web for answers. They ranged from tight primary to God knows what. Finally pulled the front sprocket cover and found something interesting. It seems someone who had worked on the bike previously had put the retaining nut on backwards. The nut has a relief edge and the other is square to fit into the lock ring. Hence, the nut had no lock and backed off leaving the pulley loose on the shaft. It was rubbing on the outer cover making the noise. I tightened the nut (left hand thread) and installed the lock ring properly and now it sounds normal. I thought I'd have to go into the trans, but this was an easy fix. My blood pressure is back to normal. Ah, the pleasures of buying a used bike with unknown history of repairs. Makes me wonder what else I'll find.

Yeah, this thing sounded like a dry clutch on an old pan when coasting to a stop. I really thought I had a clutch or tranny problem. Glad to find it was so simple.

Update... Went for a ride today and all was well. Got home and noticed the bike making a noise from the belt while backing up. Pulled the front cover again and this time pulled the sprocket off the shaft. ( I kind of thought of this after tightening up the nut the first time, but crossed my fingers and didn't look. ) The nut had been loose for so long that it almost took all of the spline out of the sprocket itself from vibrating back and forth. Luckily, the shaft is harder than the sprocket material so it's still OK. Just to be safe, I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the front, rear sprocket and belt. Costly, but I don't want to have to deal with this again.
