My first winter with my HD 2006 1200R. Any recommendations on what type (specs) of battery tender to buy and general suggestions on how to use it (leave it on all of the time or a few hour a day?) during the winter. Also, should I buy one from an HD dealer or someplace like Sears, Pep Boys, or another auto parts store. Thanks...
IMHO, the Deltran "Battery Tender" is the best charger for bikes on the market. The only time you would want or need to disconnect it is to go for a ride. Mine stays connected the entire winter except when I'm out riding. Once it has recharged the battery, it goes into "trickle" charge mode and is perfectly safe (and recommended) to keep it connected. Very convenient too. Just connect the pigtail to the battery that comes with the "Battery Tender" and plugging in and out of the pigtail takes mere seconds...
go with the YUASSA they make the batteries for most metric bikes... their more expensive charger has a 30 or so day cycle timer built in so it retest the batter after that time to make sure its still good.
It also does all the other stuff battery tenders do... charges then goes to trickle charge....
If you bought your bike(s) new, didnt you get the tender when you purchased the bike. Ray Price in Raleigh gave me one. Same as shown in blackbyrds pic. .... maybe because I bought the preferred customer (yeah right .. should have known better) maintenance plan ?
I use 2 products from Deltran which are the actual "Battery Tender" products. I have the original Battery Tender it's great if you need a little more juice. I also have the Waterproof 800 version which i prefer since my bike sits out under a canopy most all of the time. It's a tad slower (gentler?) on the battery and does all the functions of it's bigger brother.
I found it at Pep Boys for under $40, but I'm sure u can find them pretty much anywhere like ebay.
The H-D version if I'm not mistaken is a rebadged Deltran Battery Tender wall-wart version. Not waterproof tho.
