Thanks for the info everybody. I think right now I'm going to open up the speedo and try to match the bulb with a blue one (LED if possible) and see how it looks. Trying to save some money
I think by trying to save money, you will actually end up paying more. That is having to replace your current speedo. If you have a service manual go to the speedo removal section. NOTE: The speedometer and tachometer have backlight bulbs that cannot be replaced. If the bulb fails, replace the entire unit.
I think this covers everything. If I were you I save some time and money and scrap the idea altogether. I have yet to read of someone actually servicing a speedo on this forum ... without having to purchase a new one.
Does your bike have to have all those things from the factory in order for it to display them?
If you're referring to the dakota digital then nope, you don't need anything other than your bike. It's plug and play and reads all the information directly from the ECM. The gear indicator is something you set in the setup mode by riding the bike and changing gears.
This might be a ridiculous question, but with the dakota speedometer, do you still have access to the diagnostic codes as well as total mileage on the bike? Is all that info stored in the ECM and simply displayed on the speedometer?

Yeah, all the information that you get on the stock speedo will show up on the dakota. For your Odometer, you are able to set it yourself in the setup mode, but after you clock 10 miles on the dakota it will lock out that feature. So make sure that's the first thing you do before you start testing it out!

I installed a Dakota Digital on my Nightster and could not be happier with it. Simple install and setup was super easy. I wrote down the mileage on my stock gauge and when I installed the Dakota Digital that was the first thing I set. I then set everything else but forgot to set the low fuel indicator to sportster. Now that that is right I am super happy with it. All the extras include tach, gear, voltage, engine temp, zero - 60 time, 1/4 mile time, and top speed.
