And as far as picking the bike for chopping, maybe kind of get the vision of what you want and find the one that would suit you so you can cut back on the amount of change you need to make. Unless you're like most of us and like changing **** around anyway.
I mean, if you want a mid-glide front end and want it already in place, get a 48. Or, do the work and get new trees and axle and wheel and so on.
Want an EFI? Go for 2010 and up if you don't want to relocate the ECM and deal with a hole in your rear fender.
Whatever you get, you'll enjoy the **** out of taking an angle grinder to a perfectly good frame.
Long story short, I'm more of a sporty guy at heart it seems. I hate bags, windshields, comfy seats and the other comfort ****. I however have myself a '10 Wide Glide. I have done some work to it and I am stuck between keeping modding and making it a pretty stripped down bobber type bike or leaving it as is and looking for an older sporty to really mess with. Problem being I have been looking for a while for a good sporty 1200 to start with and where I am they are few and far between. I love my dyna and will most likely never sell it but I also want to take it where I don't think it is possible as far as the way the whole bike is designed with the trans mounted swingarm and such. Basically I'm asking if there is more I can do with the dyna than I think or if the sporty is really the way to go. The Dyna guys will be of very little help as they really aren't as into the heavy chopping as you guys are. Any help is really appreciated. Also, if anyone can suggest the best model to look for and the price range I would be looking at would also be a huge help.
I have both, a Dyna and Sporty. My personal preference is a solid mount 1200 for a Sporty, carbed, lighter, better lean angles, and cheap. If you can't find one in Mass you're not looking hard enough, they're all over the place due to the population density. I agree with the others who say keep the Dyna and add a Sportster.
Try Craigslist, Boston area, Central Ma, Western Ma, So. NH, Maine, and RI. That should keep you busy for a while.
