Default Going from 1st to 2nd and getting stuck in neutral

Riding a 75 sporty with right foot shift(which makes me think it's really a 74 regardless of the paperwork). When I'm going to 2nd it stays in neutral and I sometimes just reach down and crank the **** out of it with my hand to get her into place. It's hit or miss and even thou it's in rather great shape I am wondering if ya's might have had this happen to you. Any and all advice is appreciated. Oh yeah how can I stop it from slowly leaking(kidding, I already know if it don't leak it don't run...)
Hope all is good in your lives...Thanks

Default ran a bit today

So I find that smoothly going into 2nd before getting into a high rpm range in 1st; minimizes the neutral issue. Not perfect though...Keep ya's posted, thanks
