Rebar comes in different grades also, i.e., #40 and #60 grade with #60 being the better grade of the two.

Size is #3 = 3/8", #4 = 1/2" #5 = 5/8", #6 = 3/4", #7 = 7/8", #8 = 1"

Rebar has fairly good tensile strength for bending etc., but it biggest enemy is water and rust. That is why the highways require the green coating.

Never thought of using rebar on a bike, but it might look cool. It must be powder-coated or painted.

Also, cold rolled steel seems to be a MUCH better of quality of steel as opposed to rebar.

If you go with Stainless, use stainless welding rod that is of a compatible grade, as there are several types of rod. I recommend using a TIG welder to do the welding. The nice thing about stainless is all you have to do is polish it when done.

If you have ever seen "green" rebar, the green is a epoxy coating and it has a Rockwell hardness of 6060.

You'll be OK if you're using it for reinforcing concrete, but not for motorcycle accessories. Rebar is not ordinarily intended to be welded. The American Welding Society (AWS) D 1.4 sets out the practices for welding rebar in the U.S. Without special consideration the only rebar that is ready to weld is W grade (Low-alloy — A706). That said, you're not likely to find that type. Grades 40 and 60 are most common, but aren't readily weldable due to the high carbon content. Rebar isn't inferior in strength to any other steel. Just use it for what it's intended.

Yes it is not recomended to be welded when using it in concrete but I have done many small projects with rebar and never ever had any issue. From adding it to the paddles of a scraper to augers that had worn flighting. I even made my sissy bar out of the stuff.

I wonder how it knows whether or not it's in concrete?? lol!! I'm sure there's been lots of welds done on rebar that have held just fine. I just thought that anyone anticpating misusing it should be aware of the risk and limitations.
