Be careful with mids, some aftermarket pipes will not clear them.
And yes, mechanically sound. The Forty Eight shares the same engine with the Nightster which comes with mids from the factory.
I'm going back on Saturday. I'll try to scoot my butt forward on the seat with the salesperson balancing the bike. I think moving my body forward a few inches via a modified seat would be simpler than moving controls and bars back to me. I just felt like I was sliding back on acceleration.
Buy the bike w/ forwards. Take them off and sell them for $300+ on ebay and buy mids for under $100 to profit. Mids kick ***. IMO, forwards are stupid no matter what seat, bar combo you have.
I agree. I think forwards make people look silly, especially on a sportster. But to each his own.
I have mids on my 48. After the first longish ride- the forward controls just did not suit me, nor was it the stance I like to have when I am on a bike.
So I got a set of Nightster take-off on ebay for $200.

Worked like a charm. Looks good. I am happy.
Good Luck!
Opposite for me. I had mids on my Nightster and rode to Kansas City (300 miles) and wanted to turn around after 50 I was so uncomfortable. I am 6' tall FYI
Exactly. I bought a set of mids to try on my 48. Mounted them up and never even rode the bike. I knew right away it was too cramped for me just sitting on it. Not to mention my knees were about as high as my tank so it looked retarded. I've got a couple of crap knees(arthritis in one and a bone fragment wedged behind the other...I'll be screwed when I'm older). So being able to stretch out is key for me. When I need to reposition my legs I'll set my feet back on the passenger pegs or rest my left foot on the primary.
Perhaps I should have asked if this is a mechanically sound thing to do on a 48. Yes, I'm a noob. But, it sounds like the answer is "yes".
As a new rider, I've taken the advice to find what actually fits. At 5'8" and shorter legs, the mids on the Nightster and Iron fit much better for me. I just don't care for the grey of the Nightster.
At 5'8'' you must be all upper body since im 5'5'' and the forwards are comfortable as hell
