There is a little more in the way of engine improvements for the 04+ 1200 than just the added displacement.

The 883 has a bore and stroke of 3.0"x3.8", while the 1200 is 3.5"x3.8", but the 1200 also has lighter piston and rods, and the useable power range has been increased to 6,000 RPM. We hooked some gauges up to my 2005 1200C, and the internal rev-limited kicked in right at 6,000. On a 883 the rev-limited came on at 5,500 RPM.

The 883 runs a 8.9-1 compression and can run on 87 octane fuel, while the 1200 has a compression ratio of 9.7-1 and requires 91+ octane fuel.

The 1200 also uses high flow cylinder heads from the Buell XB line, and cams from the 1200 Sport.

Factory horsepower and torque figures for the 883 are 53 HP at 6,000 RPM, and 51 LB-FT at 4,300 RPM.

Factory horsepower and torque figures for the 1200 are 70 HP at 6,000, and 79 LB-FT at a very low 3,500 RPM.

As you can see, the 1200 makes a lot of torque at a low RPM, and it really screams from 3,500 RPM to 6,000 RPM.

It all depends how deep your pockets are....with the right amount of money you can have a 100 horsepower Sportster. If you do the work yourself, the 1200 conversion kit & gasket set will be about $600. If HD does it add about $800-800 labor. In either case you will still have the 883 heads & cams
Add Screamin' Eagle heads, Andrews N3 cams...about $950.......HD labor for the cam swap & checks....$200
1200 gears, sprokets & belts with labor....who knows,,,,,,$1500 guess.

My suggestion...sell the 883 and buy a 1200. I did the 1200 conversion without heads and cams but added the SE a/c and V&H Straightshots. Gotta a lot of punch off the line. Next year I'll do the heads and cams.

Higher specs on the 07. The 883 is 15 horses less than the 1200 and requires 91 octane.

Other differences are really minor...such as the jiffy stand (black vs chrome) on the newer bikes. On the fuel injected bikes, the 883 benefits from a nice torgue increase, whereas the 1200 is basically the same as the carb versions. For those in the market for a pre-owned Sportster, many 883 have receieved the 1200 upgrade but demand an 883 price--making them a Harley best-buy in my book.
