Front Wheel Bearings
A cpl weeks ago i was doing a pre-ride safety check ,as i checked my front tire air presure .i saw that what apeared to be the front right wheel bearing seal pushed out onto the spacer. i could see in the race the dry ballbearings . looked like maybe a few were missing .? i put the bike on lift and checked for play and felt non. i packed some grease in and pushed the seal back in .
i then made the drive to Dillions i stopped a few times to check for heat ect .
Dillions advertises no wait drive up service .
when i got to Dillions i explaned the problem and told them i had extended service plan . they said your coverd . and took the bike right back to be worked on . after a half hour they came back and said it would be another hour .
All said and done ...they got it fixed right away and washed the bike to .
it cost me $50 ...the deductable on my extended service plan.
The tech told me he had seen a lot of wheel bearings failing recently.

The sealed bearings used between 2000 and 2007 are/were good quality double row bearings. These bearings have no known issues and typically are good for 75,000 to 100,000 miles. I just replaced my original bearings at 76,000 miles, not because they were bad, but I figured better safe now than sorry on the side of the road later.
In 2008, with the introduction of the hollow axle, Harley changed to a single row bearing and subsequently started importing them from China. The single row bearings $uck IMO, and the quality control from China doesn't help.
All-***** manufactures top quality (USA made) replacement bearings, and they are carried by many of the common distributors, like JP Cycles, etc.
Thanks much Gpsjr !!!!
Dumb question.. I know the wheel bearings changed in 2009 t0 25mm ... did the fork stem bearings stay the same?... thanks!..

I have to have a front wheel bearing that is "rough" on the right or left side. When turning, or veering to the left I feel it pulling oddly, a rough feeling but not critical. To the right it feels extremely smooth.
The only reason I have not torn into it is because it hasn't been a priority issue (I've had many of them this year). Also I was under the impression on my '86 that some type of specialized tools, or a specific puller was need to remove the old bearing ... I will be focusing on this now!
