I know this is a sporty forum but my delima is similar. I just bought an 07 StreetBob. It's supposed to be mid 40's tomorrow in Michigan and I'm gonna pick her up. I haven't riden in longer than your age and then some. I'm a bit nervous as well but what the heck. I took the MSF course this year to regain my coordiantion, and hopefully I don't look like a goof getting her off the lot tomorrow. I have dirt bike experience but very limited road bike use. I'm stoked but nervous all in the same breath. Have fun and read these forums. Good people and information here. I couldn't believe the support and conversation a forum could give until I started reading these boards. Thanks to all.
Congrats to both of you.
Just be careful when first heading out. Our bikes may not have a high top end, but they have torque out the Wazoo! So don't twist the throttle very hard!
With the course, you should be fine. These are not "beginners" bikes, so take time to get to know the bike and ride with others who enjoy touring...and remember, drinking and riding are imcompatible. Enjoy the ride...I saw a similar bike in the showroom and it was stunning.
Im a returning biker (42). Take the MSF course and read a few books to get some pointers. They really help as do the people on this forum. The folks here recommended Ride like a Pro. Its an instructional dvd. Grab that man ... I practiced with the dvd exercises prior to taking the MSF course and felt that the course could have given more. ..Was able to do alot of the range exercises already. You can also grab the study guides online .. gives a head start for the written.
I get flashbacks of when I was in. Lotsa partying and I always got behind the wheel when I shouldnt have. The felling of being young and invinsible I suppose. Dont drink and drive (or ride) man. I admit it. Im a hypocrite.
This will be my 35th year riding. So, I have a few stories to tell. But, only one is important. Singles ("thumpers") and v-twins ("potatoes") both make a lot of torque. You're starting out with a fairly heavy and powerful ride. Buy a good, comfortable helmet before you take the riders course. Take the course on a smaller bike before you ride the Sporty. That way you will appreciate what I've just said, and you won't be like the friend who bought my last bike. All he remembers is "thunka, thunka, thunka,..." from the Life Flight chopper. He went for a harmless little ride before..., without a ....
You will enjoy the Sporty. I've had six different brands and enjoyed them all. But, the Sporty is recognized by art experts as the ultimate expression of motorcycle art. It was also the original superbike. Enjoy.
