Default Sportster Security System

Who has one installed on their bike? Do you really need it? Who wishes they had one? Burning questions...

Well I don't have one....but I've helped about 1/2 dozen people on the sportster forum get rid of their's. They all had various reasons for getting rid of the alarm system. Seems like the new hands free is less popular than the old "pressable" FOB like the autos. People forget to replace the battery every year or so and get stranded with an alarm that will not disarm. Of course if you have your pin....then you can still do that to disarm but seems like it happens once and people ditch it.

My bike came with it. I have no problem with it but replacing the FOB batteries every year is a good plan. Mine started to go dead and it was chirping every time I moved it. The bike was brand new (2010) but the batteries in the FOBs were probably 2 years old when I took delivery. Scared the crap out of a co-worker with it when he went to sit on it, thought he sat on a baby bird lol. I think I pay a bit less on my insurance by having it also.

They do drain the battery so I keep mine on a tender whenever its parked in my garage.

I have one on my '06, I've never used it. I have wondered how much it'd drain the battery overnight.

I got one, mainly because I was able to get my bike sooner than without it. Don't ask why that was... I added the "smart siren" with pager. It seems to work pretty well, I've tested it, and the pager has a pretty good range. The alarm is a pretty good noisemaker by itself, and it sounds different from a car alarm. I don't think it uses much juice while the bike is off while parked. If you worry about the bikes battery, get the trickle charger. Of course the alarm is only part of my strategy to prevent the theft of my bike. I always engage the forklock, and next month my bikes gonna be outside, as I'm moving. I'll probably get a long chain and lock it to a tree at night, and put it in a locked backyard if I'm away in my car or out of town etc.

Well, I have decided to remove mine with the help of Cosmo. Should anyone be in need of a complete alarm system they will know who to contact now.

I think the factory alarm system is more of a pain in the *** than anything. I used to keep the FOB on the key so it was always there, but that caused problems, so now I keep it in my jacket in cool weather, otherwise I have to just stick it in my pocket or if I have my bags on it goes in there.
I wish I didn't have it 'cause I don't need it & hate having the FOB to deal with. If you remove your key and lock your forks, it's going to take a lot of effort to steel the bike anyway. I don't see much benefit of it personally.
Cosmo...can you help me if I decide to remove the system all together?

Sure Shark....pretty simple process. You need to buy the standard TSM and then go through the password relearn procedure which takes about 30 minutes. The password relearn procedure is explained in post #1 of my thread:
