Default gearbox problem

hey everyone, i own a 2003 1200 XLH, runs awesome except for a shifting problem. It shifts hard, has trouble going from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. Also, when it is in neutral the light indicator does not light up, just flashes as if I went past it even though the bike goes into neutral. I was thinking maybe a shift fork, any ideas?! Thanks!

Pick up a service manual for your model and year bike and do a clutch adjustment.

1) Clutch adjustment.
2) Primary/transmission fluid level.
3) Bad neutral indicator switch or wire problem.

+1 on the clutch adjustment.
Definitely pick up the service manual.
Good article in the January issue of AIM, American Iron Magazine, on clutch adjustment and shifting issues.

hey thanks alot. I did a clutch adjustment and everything is cool in that dept. i picked up the service manual (factory) a week ago. I have a feeling that it isnt wiring bc the neutral lights up when I pass it. It just feels like a reluctancy of the bike to go between 1st and 2nd and get stuck in neutral, justb feels very stiff. I just had shoulder surgery so no work on it for a few weeks, next step will be primary adjust and level checks I'll post w results, thanks for the help.
