Cam cover chop

Default Cam cover chop

So last week I tore my bike down to the frame, removed the engine and started cutting things up. Today I figured I would start the cam cover chop and did all the tips that I had read to removing it... with one exception. I couldn't figure out why the main cam wouldn't stay in and it came out with the cover. Low and behold there is a bolt holding it in place behind the points cover. I was hoping to do this without f'ing with the cams but as my luck working on my bike would have it that isn't in the cards.

That being said are they possible to re-install without loosening the rocker boxes? To top it off the bike is most likely in 1st gear. F. M. L.

Advice/ help in the San Diego area would be great.

At least I made some progress. Hacksaw and a drill to help along the way. Went and picked up a 4 1/2" grinder and a flap disc to help clean it up. Gonna wait till tomorrow to do the grinding out in the alley so my whole garage isn't covered in metal dust.

Your 4 cams should've stayed in place. I'll pry the cover back a little and if I see them coming out with the cover I'll use a screwdriver and lightly pry them back into place.

If you don't relieve the pressure when reinstalling the cover it'll run just fine but your bushings will wear.

I didn't realize there was a bolt holding the cam to the cover behind the points cover. I read and re-read everything but just completely bonked/missed that. That is what pulled the cam out. Looks like I'll be loosening the rocker boxes. Just something else for me to learn about my bike I guess.

Will I need new rocker box gaskets if I just loosen them to relieve pressure? Also is it imperative to be in fifth gear to move everything around?

To be honest I've never done it with the cams coming out. Your manual should explain how to service your pushrods & cams.

I like that you left the left side centering pin in to cover. Once you get it smoothed out you'll be glad you did too. Not only will it prolong the life of your cam bushings, it's a cool place to route the oil lines.

So after some grinding and flap disc action this is what I have



Question is now what to use to get the flap disc scuffs out before paint. Do I just go to a higher grit disc (I used 80 to get it to this point) or sand by hand (please no). Suggestions are welcome.
