Default 5th gear

How can I get the bike into 5th gear with the engine out of the bike and no clutch lever installed? Is this easily possible or can I work on the engine without it being in 5th?

You can use the drive sproket to rotate the transmission, the one from the transmission to the rear wheel. Just rotate the sproket back and forth while upshifting the gear shift. You can also rotate the engine by removing the clutch derby cover and rotating the crank by hand, it will make it easier to turn over the engine if you pull the spark plugs, and going up through the gears. The job of the clutch is to disengage the engine from the transmission when the bike is stopped and during gear changes as it removes the load from the transmission gearing.
So with the engine not running the load is not their so the clutch is not required.

I'll give that a try. I never really thought about the clutch that way but it makes complete sense now that you mention it. I already took the plugs out to inspect them so the pressure should already be relieved. We'll see how this goes.

I've completely torn it all down and I'm having a couple things fabbed up. I'll start a thread.
