First off, thanks to everyone for answering all of my simple questions. When I first bought my 48 they pretty much brainwashed me into getting the first oil change at a 1,000 miles and they also said it needs to be done there because of the warranty. Well, it is finally that time but damn I don't want to pay $300 to do it at the HD Shop. There is a guy I know who is HD certified who can do it much cheaper and I would like to give the local guy some business. What should I do?
$300 for an oil change? Most likely $300 for the whole 1,000 mile service. IMO I would do the first service at the dealer, but after that, do it yourself. Not sure if you have the factory service manual, but that will tell you how to do everything to your bike and will save you a bunch of money. Trust us.
As far as voiding the warranty, if you do it right, which changing the oil on a sporty is simple, you will be fine. The dealer is just feeding you a line of bullshit to try and get your business.
Thanks.... That was the way I was leaning. Let them do this first one and never again. I'm ready for to put the mini apes and screaming eagles on next.
Hopefully someone can jump in here about what voids the warranty and what doesn't. Just save receipts in case anything would come up! Pick up the service manual as well, especially if you want to do new bars and pipes.
You do need to get a 1,000mile service. The oil change is particularly important because it gets rid of the oil that is carrying all the tiny metallic parts and pieces in it from engine break-in. The rest of the service is basic checks and inspections really.
Around here the 1k service is around $250 or so. Taking it to an independent mechanic will NOT void your warranty. Just keep receipts and a work order to prove you had it serviced and you will be ok.
As far as what voids your warranty, there are a lot of caveats, but essentially if you do your maintenance and can prove it, and don't do any significant engine mods you should never run into a problem. And in your case, I've never heard of a voided warranty from a correct Stage 1 and bar swap. It's when you start doing $hit the wrong way you run into problems.
I was told that if I did not get the first 1000 mile service at HD my warranty would be void.
I don't know about Canada, but in the US there is the Magnusson-Moss Act that basically says unless they can prove you did something to break the bike (neglect maintenance, intsall a piston backwards) then they have to honor the warranty.
This means as long as the service is done, it doesn't matter where.
