dont know if you can, and the reason i say this is the speedo is on the front axle....your ride has a 1" axle and the 99 and earlier bikes have three quarter inch axles...therefore its going to be hard to find something that will work with a 1" axle unless your harecore and want to change forks, wheels, axles.....yada yada.....goood luck!! oh yea try soneone like J&P they may have a small diameter electronic spedo!!
You want to put a cable driven speedo on your Sporty?
Check in an aftermarket catalog for a speedo drive that will fit your axle. You'll need to know the speedo ratio, too. Typically they come in 1:1, 2:1. or 2240:60 ratios. Figure out the cable length, and what size fittings on both ends, and order accordingly.
There is a kit available to convert an '86 - '95 Sloptail (originally with a mech speedo) to drive a mechanical speedo off the rear wheel. If the axle diameter and the drive ratio are compatible, it'd be a good choice.
There are so many ways to do this that I can't cover or go into them all here, as I don't know the diameter of your axle, the ratio of the speedo, whether to drive off the front or rear wheel, and a host of other stuff. Different bearings can be used that will allow a 3/4 inch axle to be used to replace a 1" axle. This usually requires a custom made axle, and special spacers and shims to make everything fit and align. Any competent machine shop can make the pieces, especially if you provide the dimensions required. 'Course it ain't cheap, tho!
