Default need help with rear rocker removal on 1200

Pretty sure im not the first. pulled cam cover before i removed rocker boxes or staged the engine. Three cams hit the floor. Thats not the problem. Ive figured out how all that goes back. My problem is that the valve springs have the rockers in a position that will not allow the rear rocker cover to clear for removal. Is there a way to relive the pressure by removing the tappets? will they drop out? I would rather not pull the motor from frame since all I wanted to do is polish the aluminum. ( primary cover, cam cover, rocker boxes) Any help here would be great. Thanks.

now im a total dumb ***. Why couldnt I put the cams back in and rotate motor to compress springs. this would "level" rockers and give clearnce for rocker box removal. Right?

The very top cover should come off without having to relieve pressure at all. The rear one is a very tight fit, but it can be done with some patience. Then you need to take it and make sure the cylinder is at TDC compression before you remove the lower cover(s).

Also, if your cams are already out, your lifters should have fallen out as well unless you are holding them up with something. You don't really want to put the cams in without relieving the pushrods/lifters/valves. It's wayyyyyy too much work.

Thanks for the input. I feel real stupid now. I didn't realize that there were two parts to the upper part of the rocker box. The gasket had them stuck together. Once I broke the seal the top most one slid right out. Cant believe it took me three days to figure this out.

Haha, no problem man. I take it you don't have a service manual, or that would have been apparent. The cheapest and most useful tool you will every buy. You can find them online for like $30. It's a must have if you plan to do your own work.
