Another common way water gets into the tanks is from when the gas station's underground tanks have a small leak that allows water to be mixed in with the gasoline before it even hits your sporty.

Back in the 1960's I used to race a Triumph TR6-C on flat track and scrambles. During the week, the bike was my commuter. It was standard practice back then for us to take a gas sample before the weekend races because of condensation (much like billnourse mentioned for pilots and pre-flight checks) - and that was leaded gas, before all of the "exotic" additives they use today. I doubt that there was any weekend that we didn't find water in the gas, no matter what the season was, and by taking the sample we eliminated it. Not much, but there was always evidence of it. Now, with 10% ethanol being used in the blended gas here in the northeast for the winter in place of MTBE for the tree huggers, it is especially wise to run on reserve for a while after every fill-up. Ethanol, like methanol, attracts and absorbs water.

My advice is, "better safe than sorry". Run on reserve for a bit after every fill-up. It's good practice reaching down and turning the petcock valve back to "on" after 25 miles while riding, if nothing else.

It is too easy to forget to turn back to on from reserve. If you don't remember, you are screwed. I never use reserve unless I'm out. If there is any condensation in my tank, it will burn out with my monthly addition of alcohol gas dryer. I have used it in everything from lawn mowers and chainsaws, to dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. Oh, and every car and truck I ever owned from the 70's to today. Thow in a couple of farm tractors too. Water in your gas is not much of a problem, if symptoms appear, and they won't with a little preventative maintenance, this stuff is an easy cheap fix.
