sounds like the trans took a dump - look in the manual - might be a simple rebuild[8D]

no seriously - there not too bad - but read the manual

BUY THE HD SERVICE MANUAL BEFORE YOU START ANYTHING OR THE BIKE WILL NEVER RUN AGAIN!! 3rd & 4th share the same shift fork...could be that. I wouldn't run the bike until the cases are opened for a look-see. you probably have broken parts in there and more damage could occur. Unless you have access to a lot of tools, a clean area and a press, I wouldn't break it down. If the '96 engine shares the case with the tranny then you have to remove the engine/tran from the frame, disassemble the top end down to include the cylinders, then open the case. At his point, if you're lucky, you may see the broken part (shifting fork) and be able to replace it. If it goes deeper, I would let a shop with the right tools finish it. If there is an easier way, I don't know it. Ask some indies and HD mechanics for advice. Some will help and some won't.
