Sounds like a plan. I am considering riding my 48 from Florida (about 2K miles). My mind keeps saying "yes" but my body keeps saying "NO". Worse comes to worse I do have a trailer and figure if I mention the trailer this far in advance my skin will be thick enough by rally time to take the abuse from everyone. LOL

Dude screw the haters. Riding there is on my list to do, riding there on my 48 however is not. Last year we went in a motorhome and enclosed trailer and had a damn good time. Do what's best for you. The area is beautiful and completely worth the trip just for the riding around the area.
We rode out from South Jersey last year and stayed at Black Hills State. We had a great time. 4 days out and 3 days back. As far as the college it was clean and quite. Older crowd for the most part. Beds are small but we only slept there and it was warm and dry. They have a great breakfast at their dining hall also. I even used their beautiful weight room each afternoon. It is located about 20 minutes north of Strugis. If you have any specific question let me know.
I too am going out this year for the first time. My brother lives in upstate NY he went out last year for the first time and loved it. We are going this year. I travel a lot so I booked a hotel in Spearfish right after last years Sturgis, plus I used points from my hotel stays so got it for free. Can't wait to go.
I am riding up this year too. I am planning on riding the whole way. almost 1800 miles each way. Planning on 3 or 4 days each way. I am buying a mustang touring seat and a linbar for the trip. I am meeting friends there and we are camping. I am taking my own tent and I plan on maping out KOAs on the way to stay at on the way there and back. I figure that if the weather is terrible while traveling, an economy inn along the interstate wont break the bank too bad. I have done 500 miles in a day, but never 600 miles three days in a row. I am super pumped about seeing Deadwood, Mt Rushmore, Yosimittee, Badlands, etc. I am more excited about the riding trips than the nightlife. I kinda figure the nightlife will be a disappontment, and if not, so much the better. But I am looking forward to good friends, great sites, great rides and a really long ride there and back.
I have been playing with mapquest, and figured out that detouring through MIlwaukee really doesnt add too much time to my trip (a few hours). I think I am going to go through and visit the HD Museum. I dont get up north too often, and dont know when I will have another opportunity.
Its a great time and great ride, the wife rode a superlow there and back last year,1550 miles one way. We had 4000 on the trip when we got home. We rode it in about 2.5 days each way but had great weather the whole trip out and back.
