I've made a big hole in my work schedule in August and decided to go to Sturgis for the first part of the rally. It'll be over 1500 miles and I plan to do them on the bike.
How bad do hotel accommodations get the closer you get to Sturgis? Has anyone stayed at the Black Hills State University dorms in Spearfish?
gotta book way in advance- where are you riding from? have you ridden in weather before?
gonna try for the iron butt?
ha ha! No, no iron butt. I will take it very easy. I will be riding from central New York, about 1600 miles. The farthest I've ridden is 950 miles to Illinois and back last year, but I took it very easy, stopping often. This time I plan to put speakers on the bike and blast my way west on 90, but again I will stop often and early.
The weather-- bad weather only in town. On the highway, I have been lucky. I got a bit of rain once in the highway, nothing like the storms that can descend from the mountains in that area.
I don't want the thought of a storm (wind, hail, lightning... the works) to stop me. At the same time, I don't think that I will ride through even rain. I will simply stop and wait.
I picked the school dorm because it was cheap compared to all the other prices I saw listed.
Look up Sturgis RV Park. They rent cabins as well as tents and tent spaces and are within walking distance to downtown Main St. Also very easy to get to FTS/Buffalo Chip/Drag strip all of which are a few miles east of town. There's also a side street leaving the RV park that leads right to the interstate with very little traffic at all. From the interstate to the RV park in a couple minutes.
i dont want weather to stop you either... i just want you to be prepared. the weather is often worse coming from the west- but then you never know. just have the right riding gear and prepare to pull over if you have to (as i see you already know). good luck- thats gonna be a great ride. take and drink plenty of water, stop take breaks and enjoy the ride! good luck finding a room... or camping spot.

A small tent and an air mattress for me i could never justify the cost of a motel room during the rally and take wanabe's advice it will rain and most likely will see a little hail good rain gear is a must.
Back in 04 I tried to get a motel room in murdo (I think that was the town) on my way home and they wanted $200 for a half of a night (didn't get there until 1:00 a.m.) and that turned me off to motel rooms forever during the rally. Long story short I ended up sleeping in a truckers lounge for a few hours all because I didn't bring tent along.
Better get used to riding in weather sometimes rain doesn't stop. I've ridden my my share and let me tell you, get some nice tires and rain gear it won't be a problem. Plus go slower.
I rode out to Sturgis last summer. Make sure you are prepared for any and all types of weather. I'm talking low 40s in the morning and night, 100 degrees during the day, and don't get caught out in the afternoon or you will probably get caught in a hail storm (I rode in them twice). All the different attractions and portions of the event out there are super far apart (Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Downtown Sturgis, Rapid City, Crazy Horse, Devil's Tower, Badlands). Its pretty easy to end up 200-300 miles away form where ever you are staying and then get caught in rain because it will probably rain everyday.
Hotels typically need to be booked pretty much a year in advanced, and that goes for any and all roads up to 500+ miles out of SD. Rapid City is the biggest town close to Sturgis and has the best hotel selection, IMO.
Good luck man that sounds awesome I live in northern Nj and would love to do that one day ! The weather is def not a sportys friend haha got caught about an hour away from my house on the parkway in one of the worst lighting/rain storms I've ever seen ... Let's say I put my front fender back on that night hahaha
