NADA has a 2009 priced at an average retail of $5,715 and the low ball is $5,365.

Thanks! That's what I have seen too. So why are all the used bikes marked up so high? I can not seem to find one close to that price used....

Good to know. Makes me feel better about the purchase to come!

I would sit on both bikes, look at your bank account and go from there. You will know the right bike when you sit on it as well as the look you want. I like my 09. It fits me well and there is always time to get another bike. Good luck an I hope you pick a Harley over a Honda.

All I can say is that I considered both when purchasing my first bike this past september. I went Harley Iron all way. I didn't like the look so much of the phantom after seeing it in person. Also, a plus is unless you are paying for the bike outright, most "sportbike" shops open a line of credit and basically max it out. nevertheless, get whichever you're sure makes you happiest. But make sure it's a loan or go get one from a bank....etc.

Go Iron all the way, never look back! I haven't

a big thing to keep in mind, honda and many other foreign companies consolidate parts, meaning that if all you need is a carburetor jet, sometimes you have to buy a whole carburetor. I ran into this issue a lot with my old hondas, and ended up buying parts on ebay often, and making my own parts. I had several hondas, and at least the 70's and 80's bikes, the frames were actually the biggest weakness. I cracked the neck on two of them, and snapped a footpeg mount off one. Hondas are great bikes, but if you plan on keeping this bike for any length of time, I would buy a harley. I can always find parts, and then there's the aftermarket. You can get ANYTHING for a sportster. Oh, and if you've heard that harleys leak oil, hondas leak quite a bit too.

you need the HD , it doesn't mater what metric you buy ( apart from triumph ), or how good it is compared to the Harley , it will always be a poor substitute ...even if its generally a better bike , that may sound weird if your new to bikes and HD but its true .
the iron is a great starting point to Harley Davidson ownership , you become part of something , HD riders nod or wave at each other when they pass each other , or come and chat to you about your bike when its parked , specially if you change a few things on it . , its kind of a magnet , you wont get that camaraderie or interest on a metric ..
( apart from a triumph) which are kind of accepted as cool

Check out my thread, sometimes seeing modded bikes may give you an idea as to what can b done to it and help make up your mind. I had the same dilemma and went with the 883 and couldn't be happier, I love my bike.
