I really want to know this too...i use Mobil 1 20w50 synth in my primary and am looking for a better alternative but don't want to muck things up by experimenting lol
I know this is an older thread but I am hearing the clunk in every gear. I understand 1st is normal, but EVERY gear? 2nd thru 5th not nearly as loud.... but its there.

Shift faster. If you wait too long after pulling the clutch in to lift your shifter, the gears' RPMs don't match as well, created that upshift clunk. You can let the clutch out as slow/fast as you want, but to get it into the next gear, lift the shift peg immediately after, almost while, pulling in the clutch lever. I can pre-load my Sportster's shifter and it's buttery smooth. My Softail, I don't pre-load the shifter so much, but I make the shifts quick, let the clutch out at a normal rate and it's a definite improvement over a typical, slow, lazy Harley shift.
Also, check your clutch adjustment.
The clunk you here is because the engagement of the gears, is no more then hard postive engagement.
Look at the picture and you will see the dogs that are a square cut boss
If your idle is high, and or the clutch drags a little it will clunk.
Here is what I do, Get on the bike but don't start it. Hold down the clutch Shift into second gear and roll backwards keep the clutch engaged. Then shift into 3rd gear and roll back and shift again into 4th. Keep the clutch in and start the engine. The engine will then shift without the LOUD Clunk. Now you can shift back down to first gear. Problem solved!
