Well man, how's your back? Haha I'm only 23 but there's no way in hell I would go rigid because of my back. The army tends to beat on ya. There's a couple pros and cons to switching to rigid. I scooted around on my buddies bike for a day (which is a rigid frame custom built bike) and the cool factor is awesome. But I found problems with some simple things like going through a slow turn the rear end liked to skip around a bit if there were bumps. Not to mention hitting a small bump where they repaired the road or something would send me flying at 55.
Ahh I gotcha well I'd like a bigger tire on the back and dunno how much bigger I could go with the stock rear, I don't want a huge SOB but a Lil bigger than stock
I have seen wide tire kits before for the sportster. The biggest I have seen is a 240 from Milwaukee. Check out j&p. They have a free catalog you can order. Something like 300 pages of parts and gear.
