Help - Almost stalls when warming up/possible knocking
Hello Everyone,
I just registered here to the forum and am very new to street bikes. I bought my 08 Nightster less than 2 months with only 2,900 miles on it in seemingly perfect condition. I bought it from a dealer but they are primarily Yamaha dealer and this was on consignment.
So after A LOT of research I was sold on the Nightster for my first street bike. I have rode dirt bikes in the past and wanted to buy a bike I could have for a long time instead of working my way up. Anyway, long story short I have put about 400 miles on the bike without any drops or any sort of mishaps. I am sure I have been a little rough on the clutch at first but besides 2-3 stalls nothing that should have caused any damage.
So here are my questions/concerns:
1) Upon starting the bike cold (after not running for a day or 2) it starts up and then after about 10 seconds of idling almost completely stalls then goes right back to normal idle. Almost like a quick 1-2 second hiccup. Is this normal or is there something going on?
2) I am not sure if this has always been there or not but it sounds like there is a very slight "knock" coming from the bottom portion of the engine or possibly the primary/clutch area. Anything I should watch out for or is this also normal?
Sorry if I am being vague or not descriptive enough, like I mentioned I'm new to this forum (involved in one for my truck so I know how it works and how much knowledge is here). I will try to post a video and link it so that you guys can see/listen.
1) Does it ever die? or do RPMs just drop and sound like its gonna die?
Mine does that too and as far as I know its common.
2) From what I understand if the motor sounds kind of like a sewing machine you're good. If it sounds like a bag of rocks in there you need it looked at.
With only 800 miles on it, it isn't even broke in yet. The only thing I possibly heard was the primary chain possibly out of adjustment, but phones and cameras tend to distort noises. Check your primary chain slack, put some miles on it and please remove that warning sticker from the air cleaner.
My 2012 has the same hiccup shortly after start up. It's consistant and that is all the back talk she gives me and I believe it is common.
I found a knocking on mine that was the Forward control linkage havin come loose. I have an ear for new noises. But the sewing machine analogy is spot on. I have SE slip ons that I do like (for my neighbors sake) but want Drags to drown that noise out.
