Default running loud

I have a buddy that has a 1994 883 converted to 1200. He was riding it last spring and it just started making a loud clattering noise, he took it home and parked it. Has sat ever since. I am going to go pick it up this Saturday to see if we can get him back on the road. Any sugestions on where to start, possible problems?

Could be one of 1,000 things. Really depends where the sound is coming from. Could be a loose bolt, could be a blown engine. Do you have more info on it?

No I don't. Just going off of what he told me. He doesn't know alot about bikes. So I wont know till I pick it up. Will post up more when I find out more

This may sound funny but, start it up, when you hear the rattle sound lay your hand on the gas cap and see if it stops.

I spent a week tracking down a rattle sound I swore was coming from the trans, then one time I set my hand on the gas cap and found that was the source of the noise. I had to remove the cap and recrimp the outer ring to stop it from making noise.

I would actually turn the engine over by hand first. Maybe even a compression test before you try to start it

I recently had a loud rattle start on my bike. Rear gas tank bolt was a bit loose, made the sound resonate through the tank, made one hell of a scary noise till I found the problem.

Ok, finally after a new battery, drain and clean gas tank, clean out plugged petcock and carb cleanout. Got the bike running to see what we could hear.

We narrowed it down to the left side, lower. Although it was very hard to determine where it was actually coming from. Opened up the left side primary cover and it was very evident once we got the side cover off as to what it was. The sprocket nut had completely backed off and was stuck between the shaft and the case. Luckily the outer half of the shaft is not threaded, and the nut was just riding on it. The threads in the nut are too flat to be re-threaded, so need a new nut (with red loctite) and a gasket. And he will be back on the road!
