Default picked up a differant air filter any problems?

To start I must say I have never liked the stock oval air cleaners they out on sports always hated them.
That being said I picked up a after market air cleaner at a swap meet today that will bolt on but then I got home and remembered the two little hose elbows under the stock air cleaner. **** those wont work in conjunction with this one Hmmm this is a 2005 1200 custom and was wondering what are those elbows on there for and if taken off with I screw things up for carbonation? Or can I put the new on on and go?

After digging I think the hoses are crank case breather assists are they important? Or can they be modified in some way?

Exactly what do you want to do with them? You shouldn't plug them up simply because you want the pressure to vent. EPA says it should be burned by combustion. You might want to put a horseshoe shaped breather or use breather bolts.

Got ya Aklim thanks.
Now is this blowing or sucking? Don't want to be blowing oil all over my motor!
If I use a backer plate will that keep the hoses going back into the carb? What would be the pros and cons of each set up? Sorry im totally new to doing my own wrenching but happy to have a bike I can wrench on myself.
One of the many reasons I bought a Harley in the first place.

The problem with the breather bolts is that it could leave an oily film. It is venting the crankcase fumes which is hot oil vapor. A vacuum is created by the intake which sucks it into the cylinders for combustion.

I'm not sure about that one since I don't have a carb. Supposedly, the fumes hurt max power. Some have claimed 5 HP gain by NOT sending it back to the combustion chamber. However, this means you have to dispose of it somehow. You can vent to atmosphere or go back to combustion chamber. Venting it gives more power but it leaves an oily film or a drop of oil once in a while. Can I live with that? Sure.

Just don't overfill your oil tank and it should be OK. Look into breather kits with a catch can if you really want to make sure there is no oil... you can locate that can somewhere out of the way... but then you have those hoses which are kind of ugly.

My V&H air cleaner kit has hoses that direct the venting back into the carb, but if I needed breathers, I'd just install the bolts with the filters built into them and wipe them off from time to time, if needed.

Post a pic if you can, doesn't sound right that you wouldn't need a backing plate.
