So I just recently bought my first Harley. Its a 2010 iron 883. Now the bike was bought used from a dealer. It came with a stg 1 air cleaner and aftermarket black baffles with the black header heat shield.
Now here is the problem I'm having. The dealer told me the previous owner had either flash the bike for stg 1 or had some kind of tuning program for it. The bike runs fine from what I can tell no back firing. It just sucks on gas driving it casual not full throttle with mostly 50 mph cruising only getting 40 mpg i would think i would get better mpg then that with an 883.
So I have looked for any kind of program unit on the bike like a power commander but didn't see one. I was trying to see if it had xied14 installed but I'm not really sure about how they look and where they would be installed so any help with that would be awesome. So right now I'm assuming it was dealer flashed for stg 1. I really hate the huge black baffles that are installed on the bike and want to switch to some Vance and Hines short shots. So if I do that will I need to reflash even though I think its already stg 1 tuned? If the bike is already flashed how can a reset it back to stock so I can retune for stg 1?
i only get about 33 mpg, from the day i brought it home from the dealer all stock btw. It all matters on how you ride it. Which for me, is like I stole it. I don't do that gay *** revving between stop lights though. But i'd say 40 is quite high.
If you are getting 40mpg around town with a stage 1 you are doing pretty good. The best I have ever got out of my bike is 47mpg and thats mostly 5th gear 55 mph plus highway driving. I would say I average somewhere around 35 to 40 mpg when just out and about depending on how I am riding it. Some days my hand seems to be heavier than others.
I disagree with the other mileage posts. Around town, when my bike was 883, I normally got 125 miles before hitting reserve (2.5 gallons used). That calculates to 50 miles per gallon.
It doesn't do that good on fuel now with the 1250 engine.
I'm with the majority here - 40 ain't too bad. I get between 45 and 50 mpg while bee bopping around town, not driving like a lunatic. I get somewhere between 90 and 110 miles before the fuel light comes on - give or take a few...
Thanks everyone for the responses I guess I'm doing pretty good on the MPG. I just would have thought even with a stg 1 883 I would see mid to upper 40s. I'm coming from sport bikes where I was averaging 40 MPG as well so I'm alright with the gas mileage I'm getting.
What do you guys think about the switch to short shots with not truly knowing what kind of stg 1 tune if any is on the bike. Like I said the bike runs great right now haven't noticed a problem just unsure if the bike will be fine with an exhaust swap without doing anything more to the bike tuning wise.
If you just swap the pipes and run it, chances are you will be ok with the tune just the way it is. I would put the new pipes on and ride it a couple hundred miles and see how it runs. The spark plugs will give you a good indication if any other changes need to be made.

I have short shots they are friggen loud, so beware lol
My bike is loud right now I realize that the short shots maybe a little louder but I'm fine with that. I guess I'll just install the pipes and see how it goes. As for the spark plug thing, you can tell by the color correct?
