Bike: 1995 883 Sportster XLH 5speed Evolution motor
Miles: 13k
I noticed what sounds like a grinding / slight knocking noise coming from my bike either in the front of the primary or the lower end. The noise is constant and increases at higher RPM but isnt loud enough to hear unless u look for it. The clutch does NOT affect the sound. I checked the chain its fine, so I took off the primary cover and everything seems to be fine. No signs of chain smacking the casing and no metal in primary oil. Then I checked my oil ............ I have ALOT of very fine metal shavings in my oil wich leads me to believe its something in the lower end.. Tomorrow im going to open her up more, any opinions on common problems that could have gone wrong in thier or what to look out for?? Ive never turned a wrench on a bike untill now and I don't plan on taking to a shop so any advice is highly appreciated.
Oh yah the bike still runs great..... just a noise.
I have a 2000 883 , with similar sound . Thought it was piston slap so i tried to decarbon the top end and run compression test. The noise seams to be coming from inside of case. I dont see any metal in engine oil , engine seams to be running on the rich side also. Please let me know what u find in yours. I have no time to tear down , 2 yr old keeps me busy . ty Terry
Well, it sounds like you have turned wrenches before.
Were the metal particles in the oil drained from the oil tank hose? Or the filter?
If you have that "L" shape drain hose, it is possible for some harmless metal filings to linger there. The return line to the tank might dump them there and they settle in the drain hose eventually. Hopefully just a normal occurrence. Do an oil change and find out. I wouldn't tear into it on a whim.
Sportsters make many noises, check for loose tank bolts, etc.

I would check the other side, where the cams are, the gear for the oil pump is noted for wear on the pre 00 sportsters and that may be where you are getting the metal flakes...also the bearing for the cams go bad sometimes...plus its a pretty easy check...just make sure and read the manual before your remove the cover so that you have the cams lined up correctly before hand so that it is easier to put back together...
