1996 sportster S
I just replaced the intake to head seals and now it seems to be running rich.
I suspected the po had richened it up to try and compensate for the air leak. The idle needle is exposed as if it has been adjusted but turning it in, all the way or not, does not make the black smoke stop.
If I hold the slide up with a screwdriver it will smooth out and stop smoking.
Anyone have an idea?
Check the jet sizes, mainly the pilot. Maybe the po installed larger than needed?
Enrichner (choke) cable working? A broken cable can cause the "choke" to stay on.
It is hard to know if this problem existed before I replaced the intake rubbers. The air leak at the head would have probably offset the rich condition to some degree if it did exist. It was obvious from the condition of the rubber seal on the rear jug that it had indeed been leaking.
I am pretty sure the enricher is working right but have not checked the jets yet. (the race is on now so...)
I am leaning toward a possible loose jet because of the large amount of fuel that I can see blowing into the barrel of the carb.
I forgot to check the plugs condition before running the engine after I changed the intake seals. That was a big mistake in analyzing fuel problems. I know!
I though I would post up what I found in case someone else has a simular problem.
It was the stinking petcock diaphragm pinched. I don't know why it had not been leaking before. I guess it just started at some point and the air leak kind of disguised it because it was not flooding until I replaced the intake seals, which I have done twice now.
I stuck a piece of clear hose on the vacuum line to the petcock and sucked on it and the hose filled with gas in just a few seconds.
She is running better than ever and I am a happy camper.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
