hey guys i know this is not a harley question so forgive me but i could use some help..i have a 85 el camino with a 350 crate moter with about 25,000 miles on it..im runing a weiand alum intake and a edelbrock 600cfm carb. it has a msd streetfire hei distr. with adjustable vac. advance.. the problem is i cant get it to idle right no matter what i do.i have talked to edelbrock tech and tryed everything they told me and still runs like crap..i have checked the timing and it checks out fine. i read the plugs and they are very black and sutty..meaning i think it is running very rich.. but like ive said i have done everything to lean the carb out and nothing has helped..its now smoking a little.there are no engine knocks or sounds.. i have to idle it up to about 1100rpms to get it to run some what better when i put it in drive..im thinking it could be a vac. leak in the intake gaskets but i sprayed carb cleaner and it doent pickup a leak anywhere.. could a internal leak be posible from the intake gaskets leaking towards the inside of the intake causing oil and maybe coolant or vacuum to leak inside the engine..the carb is new the intake is new all with about 25,000 miles on them...sorry for the long post about a car problem but i thought you guys could give me some good advice...thanks guys
RE: question about a poorly runing car..please help
Sounds like you could have a leaky intake manifold gasket. As you stated, oil or coolant could be leaking into the cylinders from there causing the rough running and the smoke.

Go find Blackstone Laboratories in Fort wayne Indiana on the internet (google) The order a free oil analysis test kit and send them a sample of your used oil from your oil pan. (drain out a bit when hot into the sample bottle) send it to them and for $22 they will tell you if you have coolant or fuel in the oil. Then you will know for sure without tearing down the engine. Easy peasy. Takes about 10 days to get a report back. If that is not the issue then got to the GM Trucks .com forum they have master GM techs there who may be able to help you much like here.

Something else for you to look at. Is the intake a 180° or 360°?
A 360° will not idle on a stock Chev engine. It has to do with the vaccum and air flow drawing fuel and air in the primary.
At least that's what I was told.
I run a stock bottom end 1994 350 in my S10 with a 360° Holley high rise intake and Holley 650 vac secondary carb and it would not idle either until I changed cams and the profile of the engine, etc.. When I changed to a 180° intake one time and it idle'd smooth but has less top end power so I switched back and just jacked the throttle to keep it running.
It runs very strong otherwise.

Yeah it works well. If you do have a small coolant leak you don't want to wait until one of the pistons sucks a whole load of coolant in on a downstroke and then trys to compress it......then it's rod, piston & crank time. Don't ask how I know this.
