Okay so im new to posting as well as owning a HD Sporty. Im slightly mechanically inclined so I knew I could take on this project myself
I was experiencing carb farts on my Sporty, so I decided to check the plugs since it was beconing hard to start even after sitting for 15 to 20 mins. Found out one of my plugs was burnt because it was running rich, so I replaced them. So I decided to take on the task of adjusting the Carb. I set the screw all the way in, the backed it out 2 and a half. Went to start and it ran for 10 seconds the quit. So I backed it out another half turn and it started, coughed once then continued to run. I drove it around and experienced no farts since. Is there anything else I should look at doing? Or was this all that was needed?
first of all the plug would be fouled (black) if rich , not burnt,,thats lean..
second part, is if it takes three turns out to run , it is still lean.
install one step bigger pilot jet , then while running back out airscrew until it bogs down, if it doesnt put in one more step richer pilot.
when you get it too lean ( rough running when turning in airscrew, and rich when turning out (bogging), then find the middle spot , and turn it i/2 turn richer (out ) .
you should be about 1- 1/2, to 2 turns out at that point
Now if you have a modified A/C , or pipes , run wide open in 2/3 gear, shut engine off , and look at plugs , snow white =too smallmain , black -sooty too large main.
you are looking for light tan ...
hope this helps ya
If you feel lack of response or what how I like to describe it, a bouncing bubbly feeling when giving your bike quick revs than it might be running alittle too lean
Thanks for the info guys. I adjusted the screw 3 1/4 out and its running smoothly now. Took it highway cruising and had no problems whatsoever. I checked the plugs afterward and they are clean, no soot and no burning. Oh and I have the Stage 1 A/C kit and upgraded exhaust.
