Should a 2 x 4 be put under the kickstand when using the tender so the battery is not leaning to one side so much?

Huh? Never heard this before. No, plugging the tender in while on the stand is fine.

bike has been sitting since November, tried starting it yesterday, no problems at all. threw it on a tender anyways since I was stripping stuff apart.

No it's not normal. You should really hook it up to a tender but, before you go and buy a new battery you should take the old one out, charge it fully and leave it for a few weeks if you can.
Measure after a time and see if it did loose charge. I would hate to see you buying a new one whilst the problem was a sneeky drain caused by the bike's electrical system.
Or have the battery tested properly.

If the bike is leaning over to much it could leave a small part of the plates dry so it's not too far fetched although not expected.

Not an issue with an AGM battery, if you consider the angle of the battery placement in a V-Rod, leaning on a side stand is nothing.
