Default Good things bring on new problems

So we just found out my gf is pregnant, which is great. But that brings on some questions. She has a 2012 iron that we just bought for her a few months ago, what do we do with it now? Did any of you guys have your wife ride when she was pregnant, even in the early weeks? I'm sure I already know the answer to that, just being hopeful. Do we just pretty much let it sit for nine months? I mean I would ride it very occasionally because I have my own iron. But even after that how often will she really get to ride it? Or should I look at selling hers? OR should I look at trading both of ours in on a softail deluxe. Before I had a bike I always pictures myself on the softtails, but when the irons came out I liked them as well and due to budgets restraints I bought that instead. Now I could get one if and only if I traded both of our bikes in for one. The only thing stopping me from leaving right now to do that is that I have put a lot into my bike and really love how it looks and rides. I have a 1250 kit, supertuner, v&h shortshots, new flat black paint, and white walls. I don't know what to do, and I am afraid whatever decision I make I will regret it, what would you guys do?

Pic included, mine black hers red.

Why doesn't she ask her doctor?
Normally if there are no known complications, very few restrictions are placed on a woman's activity during the first 4-6 months of pregnancy.

First of all, the feeling that you have of making the wrong decision, all I can say is "welcome to parenthood". To try to help you with your situation, ask yourself this single question. "What is more important?" and the decision will come. Nobody can decide for you.

My question was more about should I trade my bike in or not. I already know that I don't want her to ride. I was hoping someone could convince me its ok, but I think that will be difficult. If something happened because we were too selfish to wait, I don't think I could deal with that.

Going against my normal nature I'd say play it safe. I know my sister rode passenger while pregnant a couple times on her husbands bike but, it's a risk I feel is unnecessary. As far as whether to keep them or trade them in ultimately is your decision. What you need to keep in mind though is will you be happy starting from scratch on making the bike yours again if you do? I love my Nightster and due to my job I have been forced to let it sit for a year at a time before I could ride it again. That being said the softtail deluxe is a classy classic looking bike that I've even thought about purchasing. Who's to say that she won't want to ride her own bike after pregnancy. I'd say that would be the biggest question of all.

This is really a personal decision only you and your GF can make.
Is a Softail Deluxe something you want and will be happy with riding solo, or would you rather ride your bike solo? "Most" women will tend to have little time or interest in riding once that 1st born arrives.

A friend was in a very similiar situation 8 or 9 years ago. Wifey got a brand new Sportster and got pregnant. She was interested in riding and was sure she'd ride it after the baby was born, but I don't think her heart was really in it. They didn't sell her bike. After three more years and only having ridden it a couple hundred miles, they sold it, taking a bigger hit on depreciation as well as taxes and insurance. They have money and never needed money, but nobody wants to throw it away.
For her, not riding was the result of thinking about the risk of the baby loosing his mother to an accident. It wasn't that she was unable to find the time to ride.
The sloptail is a totally different ride. I love mine and bought it before the Sportster, but I find I ride my Sportster more often.
This is on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The next four times I headed that way, I took the Sportster.

P.S. My gal got her first bike when her youngest was 12. She's probably got about 75,000 miles under her belt since then. She has life insurance. Ya gotta do what you gotta do.

First off Congrats man. We just had our daughter a few months ago. As you can see here, I couldn't keep my wife off my bike. She rode here and there every now and again up until about 5-6 months. Was out again on one of her bikes about a month after the birth. Sure it's a risk, but pregnancy is tough mentally... and sometimes you just need it. Life's a risk whatever you do, just have to find your own comfort zone.

I wouldn't sell. Sure it's harder now to ride than the previous "whenever the hell I want to". But we just took a weekend trip on the bikes, and damn we needed it.

If you want to distract her during the pregnancy and keep her off the road some, get her a project bike. This is how my wife (who incidentally wants a red iron) spent much of her time: http://www.flickr.com/photos/3175794...7630291912522/
