Default Need advice

I am thinking of purchasing a 1987 Sportster 883 to use a an around town bike. I already have a cruiser.

Anyway, the guy says the bike has new JP pipes and needs to be rejetted. He also said it has an oil leak on the left side were the shifter goes into the engine. He says it is a small oring that needs to be replaced. Also, he said it needs new tires, how much will that cost? My question is are these easy fixes? ANd how much would you think they will cost to fix?

The bike has been repainted and has lots of chrome. He is asking $3,700. But, he also said he has got to put a new roof on his house and needs $2,700 for materials.

What do you think guys?

Before handing over your cash, go to the xlforum.net website. Between these two (this one and xlforum) you should be able to do a good search for possible issues. The price ($2700) seems good, if it is a fixable leak. Make sure it is not a cracked case. You might want to get a service manual (check your library) for reference when you go to look at the bike. Put on the old pipes and see if it really needs to be rejetted. Most likely it has need for carb work, although it might respond to cleaning/tuning.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Tires should be less than $200... I don't know about the rejetting... exhaust is not why you rejet for the most part.... it has more to do with changing the air intake...

The "O" ring... if that's what it is... and was such an easy fix... you'd think that he would have done that... could be me though...

I think you can find newer bikes for $3700.00 but at $2700.00 it's a maybe...

You have to think about it... after all... it is 20 yrs old...

If the price can be negotiated down to $2700 buy it but intend on dropping $1000 in repairs and things that have not been done recently.Like an oil change and primary oil.I bought my wife an 02 883 for $4000 hell of a lot newer than what you are looking to buy.The other thing you may want to consider is that bike is chain drive instead of a belt unless it has been changed over to belt drive.Belt drive doesn't require adjustment as often as chain which you will most likely need to replace along with the sprockets.I had an 88 sporty and it was chain driven.Belts last a hell of a lot longer than chains by the way.

Including labor, I'd say tires, shifter seal, carb kit, I'll say $600. I had new tires put on mine a few years ago and it was close to $300.
I like later models myself, 93 and newer and prefer 1200's. I have a friend that wants to see her 03 883 for around $5000.

If you don't want a "fixer-upper", there are better deals for newer machines out there!
