Hey everyone, I need some help. A friend bought a 2010 XR1200 with 1850 miles on the clock. The bike runs fine accelerating through the gears, but breaks up between 2000 to 3000 rpms when holding a steady speed. Below and above these rpms there are no issues. The only changes he made to the bike was putting D&D 2 to 1 pipes and muffler on the bike. Anyone else here ever have this problem, and how do I fix it?
Did he use a fuel tuner? Sounds like a fuel delivery problem in those ranges, and if he put new pipes on it could have affected that. The XR's are more sensitive than the standard XL's when it comes to tuning.
He has a PCIII for the bike ,but we haven't installed it yet. I wanted to work out this problem first. By the way, the bike didn't have this problem with the stock pipes. I replaced the exhaust gaskets when I changed out the pipes.
Working on the problem now would likely be a waste of time. The pipes have probably caused a lean mixture condition and the PCIII will correct that, but there's no point in messing with the tuner until the new A/C is installed.
Just lower speeds in that rpm range? If so its surging which is common.
It feels like the injectors are pulsing (for lack of a better word), and not an even flow of gas. The strange thing is it only happens between 2000 to 3000 rpms, with the speed held constant.

Not strange at all. That's where you likely get a lean stumble. It's also in the range the narrow band sensors control. Get the PC on!
