Glad you were ok. A bike can be fixed. Personally, I would have went back to check on the dog.
If that happened to me I would hope the dog is dead.
I would go back and have a few words for the owner. Have a dog means you should have control of it. I had control of mine.... Thats a bunch of bullcrap. Glad you are ok.
Damn right. Alabama has a leash law. A pet's owner can be held liable for damages. A friend of mine's dumb-azz dog ran out in the road and got nailed by a car, damaging the bumper cover and air dam. He had to pay for the repairs. Sucks he lost his dog, but a pet owner has a moral andlegal obligation to control his/her pet and rightfully should be held accountable for it's actions.

Yes, it is true guys, I hit a dog in the dark the about two weeks ago on my 1200 Sporty. And as fate would have it, it couldn't have been a chiuawa (?SP?)....this dog had to be at least 70lbs. [:@]
Just curious if anyone else has done something similar?
Holy $hit, glad your Okay and kept control... tough todo.
I hit a Jack Rabbit @ 45mph., that was spooky enough.gassed it andpulledon the handle bars to lighten/lift the front and shift the weight. The impact was minimal up front, but the rear impactdamn near launched me off the bike. However, kept control and knew if I would have hit the breaks I would have went down. Large dogs and deer? Thats what nightmares are made of...
I run over a racoon going about 60mph it was a minimal incident just a thump and a bit of a wiggle and I run through a flock of ducks waddling across the road which was nasty they were trying to get airborne but I ended up with feathers ,guts and duck poop all over me and the bike.
Thanks to everyone for posting replies and sharing your stories! I laughed my butt off at jwb47's story about the ducks....I think I would have rather hit those than the dog 4 sure!!!!!....you guys keep safe out there!
P.S. Down here in Texas, as far as I know, leash laws only pertain to roads within city limits. (Y'allprove me wrong if you know something I don't.) Now, when it comes to livestock (cows, horses, etc.) if you are on a State Hwy, the owner of the animal is responsible for damages, and if you are on a Farm to Market road, and you hit an animal, you are responsible. Might be the same in your state....just FYI.
Not to point fingers, but the rider also admitted his head light was not aligned properly....fault with the rider and the owner...still, not the dog's fault.
My father-in-law hit a deer on his Suzuki 650; knocked him backward off the back, only hurt his pride. He was wearing leathers on that day, not his usual garb, but it is now.
I had a swallow clobber my windshield; scared the b'jeezus outta me. Also left a gnarly splotch that dried to a nice hard crust before I could reach a water source (guh-ross).
That is the very reason I don't do much night riding...
But when I do, I do it at a much lower speed, ride the center line with my light on high beam... right hand covering the brake lever, right foot in the ready position...when ever possible...
The bugs are bad enough to deal with... f*&k the dogs, deer and anything else out there... lol

Try arguing that in court.
Dog owner's fault. Period. Think of this: You are driving down the interstate andsomeone is juggling bricks on an overpass. He misses one and it lands on your car, but you have a sunvisor down and are looking straight ahead, is that person not liable because you knowingly had your vision partially restricted and was not paying attention to what was above you? One could argue that your visor was not adjusted properly. NEGATIVE. That person would be guilty and be held liable for said damages....and would likely go to jail with a whooped ****.
Letting a dog run wild is just as wreckless. If you cannot control it, you do not need it.
