i have a 91 sporty, sometimes i get on it and it pulls away great speedy and smooth in first gear, then it seems to not be as nippy after that, i think it could be something to do with the carb or fuelling, what can i do to sort this problem out? i'd like to try sort it myself rather than paying out mega bucks for a mechanic to do it. any help or advice would be grateful!
Your bike is over 20 years old. There could be any number of things not quite right with it after all this time, not least what previous owners may have done to it!
Get yourself a factory service manual, so you have to hand info you can refer to. It will help doing routine servicing as well as with any less routine jobs.
On the fuel side, I would start with cleaning the tank and tap filter, to remove any gunge, stripping and cleaning the carb, especially the float chamber. Clean and check for tightness all earth/grounds and electrical connections in the ignition circuit, plus main power and battery terminals. Quite silly things can cause disproportionately great problems.
If all fails, don't faff about, but get yourself to a local indy to help sort it out. There's no point being a martyr to DIY if you can't sort it out yourself!
