Default Iron Gaiters Fade from Black

The fork gaiters (boots) on my XL883N have been gradually fading the past year to a murky brown. It's not just road dirt and won't wash off. Sure Armor All or similar silicone spray might buff it up but I think there's a problem with the rubber compound itself. Any others have this cosmetic issue? Yeah, I know I should just toss em but I assume they help keep road grime away from the seals.

Tire shine seems to work well on mine.

The browning is actually like a dead layer of skin on the rubber. Tires do it, and then you scrub them with a good degreaser and you can watch the brown stuff rinse away. Tire shine/armour all, anything that's silicon based will cause that after time, and most people just keep using it to cover it up.
I would try scrubbing them on the back side with some degreaser and rinsing them well and see what they look like after they dry. Might take a few times.
