Default Low oil?

New bike just turned 700 mi. Had the VR replaced last week. Short ride today, fueled up so upon return checked tire pressures and oil as I wiped her down a bit. Now I'm freaked out bc level is right at fill mark. Could this be right?

I fear adding oil because of the warnings if too much added-- getting in air filter etc. really surprised if needs oil at 700 mi!!

That isn't really that low, maybe add a third of a quart.

Keep in mind that when engines are breaking in they'll burn more oil. The rings and seals are still wearing into their grooves to better match each other so for now some oil will get past and burnt up.

I don't check mine so often anymore, but I'm well aware of how much it burns (very very little if any). I'd say I check it once a week or so just to make sure it's on the dipstick. It's never varied in the 20k+ miles I've put on it.

And Alex is right, it will burn a little more during break in. That's normal.

It's also possible the dealer just didn't fill it all the way up to begin with. Who knows.

If I'm not mistaken, the MoCo says that it is normal for our engines to burn 1 qt/1000mi. I keep mine around half full and have never had to add more than a quart between changes.

do you think it was worth the $?? heard the analog is better than lcd -- do you have a photo of the one you use - you say it gives you temp and level - that may be worth it.. thanks ..

I'd recommend the analog temp gauge, the digital gauges have a long history of premature failures. Either way, they are both much easier than the stock dipstick to remove/install and they don't wind up accidentally popping up if you bump it with your leg.

+1 on cHarley's recommendation. The digital oil temp. / level gage (P.No. 62700011) was one of the first MoCo accessories I got to my later regret. While the temp. may have been OK the level readout bore little relation to actual fill. Now my engine is broken in it uses virtually no oil so I don't need to worry about checking level so fastidiously.

it was expensive... i bought it because i had an analog and it had the "usual" moisture in the dial issue that the moco is known for. my speedo has some of it too. got tired of the oil temp being hard to read. love the digital one so far. push a button and it tells me the oil temp, the level of oil and whether the engine is warmed up or not. first time since i have owned this bike that i actually know when it really is warmed up and i can tell you its much later than i had thought (meaning that our engines take a lot longer to fully warm up than i thought- and which is prob why i blew my head gasket from riding it like i stole it before it was really warmed up!)
