Default accident advice please.

Hey guys and gals, Hello. Been reading the forums for a few years and finally registered. I'm not an old biker but not a new one either.

Last week-end I was hit from behind by a cage. I got lucky and walked away with only a little road rash. The bike didn't make out so well. Her insurance adjuster has not been out yet, probabley this coming week. They will hear from me monday one way or another. Never been in an accident on the bike before and hoping to get some advice from folks who have.

My middle kid. 1996 Sportser 883. The damage I see......clutch lever broke, clutch cover beat to crap, left rear turn signal gone, rear fender and brake light gone, rear wheel (solid) buckled, the drive belt is loose.

Any thoughts on what I can't see? Fix or replace?

Thanks,
Mike

You most likely have a damaged swing arm. Where the signal attaches is likely damaged. The frame will need to be checked. Clutch and inner gears can be damaged. Clutch cable end (inside cover)? Left Primary case? Gaskets? Bottom of foot peg? Rear brake hub? wiring at tailight?

Get it to the dealership and let them assess the bike and provide an estimate. You have the opportunity to beat the other guy's insurance to the punch. Take advantage of it. That way, when the adjustor stops by, you can either hand them the estimate or tell them to coordinate repairs with the dealership.

And don't settle for less than what you had on the bike before the accident. If you had chrome foot pegs that were damaged, make them put the same chrome foot peg back on the bike.

If you haven't done so already, go take a ton of pictures of the bike and especially those areas that were damaged.

Agreed. My friend did this with his 02 883 and got 4k for broken bars and superficial damage. Call your dealer and see if they have a field claims assesor. Our local HD does.

Have you already contacted your insurance agent w/info? If not - time to get the ball rolling & start on your end as well...keeping in mind you're the one they'll try to bend-over. Don't take anything less than what it takes to get bike back to 100%!

Personally, I would talk to a lawyer. He'll know the law and steps to take better than we do... Glad you aren't badly hurt.

The dealer actually picked up my bike and billed the insurance company for towing. I'd for sure call the dealer and get all "original HD" parts quoted. Worst part was having to wait two months to get her back while I got released from hospital in one day.

Oh man two months without my bike and I would have to sue for emotional distress!

A very good plan. It's best to have all your ducks in a row before having to get down and dirty with an insurance company.
