Angry Heeeeellllp!!!

Hey guys and gals, I recently purchased a preowned HD XL1200C.After i passed the course i was so excited to get riding and keep practicing this labor day weekend. I am a complete noob when it comes to this....i started the bike on neutral and it started went off for about half a block put it on shift 1 and it ran awhile then stopped! Wtf did i do wrong!? I had to roll it back to the garage lol the oil indicator light is on and wont turn off now each time i start it and when i try with the starter it just a bunch of clicking noises! Just asking if anyone would know what the hell could be the problem. I cant call no one cause its the holiday weekend and nothings open!! So excited to start riding this weekend and it was a complete fail..any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well if u mean when i pulled out of garage there is a ramp going up to go on street and thats where it stopped.

Ok. lets start at the beginning. We need to figure out what exactly happened when it stopped. You said you started it in neutral and went about half a block, then put it on shift 1 and it ran for a while and stopped. Ok, don't be insulted if I go very basic on this since you are new to motorcycles, you may or may not know this. Your motorcycle gears are as follows 1st, neutral, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th if you have 6th. The shift pattern is 1 down, and 5 or 6 up depending on 5 or 6 speed. Neutral is in between 1st and 2nd. So, if you start the bike in neutral, you push the shifter down to go into 1st gear. So if you said you went half a block so you shifting into either first or second to do so. When you first shifted did you push the shifter down or up? You then said you "put it on shift 1". I'm assuming you mean you shifted gears. The question is once again, did you push the shifter down or up when you did so? When you say the bike ran for a while and then quit, were you driving in gear when it quit or idling in neutral?

The guy is saying it wont start period now? Sounds weird to me. Im thinking you stalled it out and the battery is dead. Charge your battery man and start riding

Are you sure its the oil light and not the low fuel light? don't be insulted, it could happen...lol

What year bike? If carbureted, check the fuel petcock?

Exactly my suspect...if it's a pre-EFI XL1200. The lights will be on w/ignition (doesn't necessarily indicate problem), but if the fuel's off = she'll die. Also, sounds like the battery got drained while trying to re-start bike...

+1 on all of these things. That was exactly my thought. Check the petcock first. Then charge the battery. Then try to start again. If it does not start then we will need to know more. That is assuming it is NOT an EFI bike.

Its ok if all you guys talk in basic terms to me and tell me the most basic problems, I wont feel insulted at all, all this input is very helpful. Hey we all started as noobs one time. Yeah what I meant was I started the bike in Neutral, then changed to shift 1 not pressing any throttle just using the clutch to control speed until I got up to the automatic garage to open ( I live in condo) and as soon as I got out of garage there is an uphill to get out to street about a quarter of a block, pressed on throttle to go up hill as I was going midway up the hill I changed to shift 2 and thats when it started to skip on me a little and as soon as I got up that ramp it stopped.

I also think I did not wait a few seconds for the engine to warm up I just left and maybe thats the problem as well?

Whats a petcock?

If the battery ran out then when I put the killswitch to run everything is on, all the lights etc. So I dunno. And I dont think its an EFI cause I am lookin at the papers now and its a 2009 XL1200C, I dont see EFI anywhere not even in the manual. THank again everyone for your input, just so damn pissed I didnt get to practice this weekend, arrrrgghh.
