Not sure what year yours is, but my '99 back cyclinder was a bear. Make SURE piston TDC compression stroke or it AIN'T comin out. Then when it does, same thing goin in. Anyway, I'd do both cylinders (upper + lower) at the same time. After doin the back, front will take about 30 min.

Dumb question - and I should probably check the service manual before asking - but how do you turn the motor over so that the piston is on the compression stroke to get the clearance to pull the rear cover?

Jack up the rear wheel. Pull the plugs, put the bike in gear and turn the rear wheel by hand. The service manual will tell you how to find where you want the pistons/stroke for each front or rear heads.

5th gear turns the engine the easiest.

My 2008 Nightster had this lead about 2 months ago.
I just bought some genuine gaskets and did the rear cylinder only.

So far, everything is bone dry.

Very satisfying to have fixed something myself!
