Friend of mine has apes on his iron but they keep slipping. We tried putting sand paper between the risers and bars but they still slip. Any ideas?

Maybe try wrapping the bars with some coarse steel wool and clamping the bars down then. Maybe that will work?

His bar mount bolts might be to long. Cut them down a few threads and see if that fixes it. I had to do that to my bolts when I changed my risers on my 48. Or if he doesn't want to cut them, buy some shorter bolts. Also make sure he has 1" bars and not 7/8" bars. Our bikes take 1" bars.

Cool. I'll check those things out. They are burly bars and supposed to be 1" but I dont know anything about there quality control. Might be slightly small.

Are the bars knurled where the clamps grab it? If not, you might need to pin them. Meaning drill a hole in the risers, stick an appropriate sized roll-pin in the risers and then matching holes in the bars then clamp them down. The pins will stop them from rotating.

could try carbon fiber anti slip paste. Seen it used on high end aluminum mountain bike components that are subjected to a lot of stress but cannot be torqued tightly to keep them from moving.

Knurling alone will not stop them turning. Your suggestion of pinning them is spot on!

How about two thin shims made from an empty beer can. Cut just under the width where it wont be seen. The length will be the diameter of the bars.

Look at the point where the clamping sections come together. You should see a slight gap between them. If there is no gap, the bars may be the wrong diameter. If the bars are the right size and still no gap you can sand or file some material from one of the clamping blocks, which will give room for tighter squeezing of the bar.
The pin fix works great, but does not allow any future adjustment without drilling more holes.
