Default ???

I recently bought my wife a 09 Sportster 1200 xl custom, originally from Cali. After I fuel it up the bike wants to stall for a few miles then it clears up and runs good till it's time to fuel up again.
I've changes gas caps, vents are open and Cali. emissions cannister seems to be open as well.
Any ideas??

Don't you have an electric fuel pump? Maybe something to do with it?

Fuel pump is a known prob. I am not sure its actually the pump, it may be the relay/fuse which isnt very well protected. The relay/fuse is under the left cover next to the battery, may have a look at that.

Here's a wild stab at it - possibly overfilling the tank and causing vent problems until you burn off that little bit of extra fuel and allowing it to vent properly. I go with this theory cause you say the problem is only right after filling up and then is good til the next fill up. full tank=problem - not full=no problem solution - don't top off the tank

You could be onto something there, good suggestion. Gas is normally stored under ground, so is cool when first filling up. However if it is sunny and hot, once in the bike's tank the gas will quickly warm up and expand, which could add to the problem.

+1 on the overfilling. I have a 48 w/ the peanut tank, so I tried to fill it just as much as I could at first... with the same sort of results... now i don't 'overfill' it and the problem stopped.

Could be that relay fuse I just changed the battery and could have loosened it up.
I'll try not filling it up so full.

i have overfilled and the bike acted as you suggest... but you know when you overfill cause the excess comes spilling out.
