I bought a 79 sportster project bike and had a guy build the motor. got it back and wouldnt run worth a crap. so I brought it to a reputable shop and had them go through it to make sure everything was good. they put an oil pump on it because the oil wasnt circulating. i get it back and go to test it out and after about 3 miles i hear a little backfiring and clanking in the motor(same sounds i brought it in for). so i look in oil bag and oil was low and not circulating so i took the pump out and drained the oil....there was probably a little more than a quart in the whole bike. would that cause the noise and make the pump not work properly? what should be my next step
Yes it would cause noise. Fill the oil up to the proper level and try again. Just a question, are you sure you didn't drain the primary? It usually holds a little more than a quart. If there was only a quart of engine oil I doubt you would see any in the oil tank.
