Default I'm stuck in 5th

I was riding the other week and running up and down the gears. I came up to a stop sign and started downshifting, but nothing happened.

It feels like when you're in 1st and you keep clicking down. It feels like that when you click up or down.

The clutch works fine. I can't push it with the clutch out, but when I pull it in, it rolls just fine.

I tried to pull the primary cover off, but after getting all the bolts out, I can't pry the cover off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a '95, but I'm not sure if it's a clutch problem because it rolls when clutch is pulled in and feels like it's in a gear when I let go.

I don't know why you would have a problem pulling the primary cover off. But sounds like you need to get it off and get into the transmission. Something is either stuck or broken.

Maybe check the detent plate, there is a bowed snap ring there that may have come off. I'm just passing on what I recently heard from my local indy. My bike seemed to jump out of 3rd and back in, only done it a couple times. Took her out for a 50 mile ride the other day and no problem with shifts at all

Long story short, he told me the detent plate and bowed snap ring can cause problems, quoted 2 hours labor plus $40 parts. I'll bet if that snap ring came loose, you'd probably be stuck in whatever gear. He said you could see it with the primary cover off, but you have to pull the clutch basket, primary chain, and engine sprocket to fix it.

Since mine seems okay again (I tried to be extra solid on that 2nd to 3rd shift!) I'm going to wait and see how it goes.

Good luck.

The previous owner painted the primary cover black. I wonder if he painted it black while on the bike. If he did, maybe the paint is preventing the cover from easily sliding off. I removed all bolts, loosened the ramp nut, removed the shifter lever.

I would assume that it should just slide off? And I also cannot remove the Inspection cover. I even broke an allen wrench trying. At least the Derby cover comes off.

It's hard to believe how some people tighten little screws like that. I guess you're lucky they aren't stripped. Some overzealous user of Loctite, no doubt.

This is coming from motocross experience and I am new ti the whole road bike scene. But what will happen some times is the splines on your shifter will strip so your in able to shift. I would just take a wiz wheel/die grinder and grind down the side with the gap a bit so you can tighten down the shifter to the transmission shaft tighter. If any of that makes sense

This is one of those mysteries that could end up with you having to dismantle the trans to find what is wrong. If you are up to doing that get a factory service manual if you don't have one, otherwise find a local indy and talk to him.

That's a good idea to check, common on dirtbikes.
